“We conserved our land with the Land Trust because we knew that the creek, juniper forests and all the wildlife will be cared for forever.”

Land Trust Accreditation process begins

The Deschutes Land Trust seeks certification by national Accreditation Commission.

As many of you know, the Land Trust has begun the process of obtaining formal accreditation under the professional standards of the national Land Trust Alliance. Accreditation is a formal certification by an independent commission that the Land Trust is serving the public’s interest, is operating transparently, and consistent with the highest professional standards. Land trust accreditation differs from a traditional financial audit by focusing on a rigorous, 3rd party review of projects, policies and procedures. Essentially, it’s your assurance that your gifts to the Land Trust are appropriately used and the community is well served by the organization. From our perspective, it helps assure us that we’re operating efficiently, professionally, and will be around for generations to come. A recent article in High Country News about sham transactions and inflated appraisals of conservation easements underscores the need for the accreditation program and adherence to high professional standards.  As our accreditation audit proceeds, our supporters, as well as the general public, will have the opportunity to comment on how well we serve the community. We hope you’ll take at opportunity.
