The Land Trust and the greater Sisters community lost a dear friend this past weekend. Bob Baker, owner with his wife Gayle of Rimrock Ranch, passed away Saturday after a brief illness.

Bob grew up in Texas but eventually made his way to Alaska after serving in the U.S. Marine Corps overseas. It was from Alaska that he set his sights on Sisters and more specifically on Rimrock Ranch. Gayle arrived at the ranch first and began to make the place into a home. Bob retired from his aviation law practice a while later and moved down to the ranch for good.

When he bought Rimrock Ranch in 1988, Bob knew enough about conservation to know he wanted to keep the property in one piece. It wasn’t long after his arrival that Bob contacted the Land Trust to put that thought into motion, inspired by an article he’d read regarding a Nature Conservancy project. As they worked with the Land Trust to develop a conservation easement, and later a restoration plan for Whychus Creek, Bob and Gayle always put permanent protection of their property first, sacrificing personal priorities with the knowledge it was for the greater good of the creek.

Bob and Gayle shared many good years at Rimrock Ranch, hosting family campouts along the creek every year and opening their property and hearts to the Land Trust as we organized hikes, Bat Nights, Star Parties, and other events that allowed our community to experience this beautiful property. Everyone who visited the property was understandably stunned.

Bob had an unceasing thirst for knowledge and was fascinated with the prospect and mechanics of restoring salmon and steelhead to Whychus Creek. His appreciation for Rimrock Ranch and its conservation knew no bounds. We are deeply saddened by his loss and will miss him dearly, but we are comforted by the fact that first adult steelhead to return to Whychus Creek in almost 50 years returned to Rimrock Ranch, and Bob was there see it.
