Tree Hunt

***11/29/21 Weather Update: Weather conditions are looking favorable for this Saturday, December 4th. We will make a final decision on Thursday and update this page with additional information.***

The Tree Hunt will be held at the Land Trust's Metolius Preserve North Trailhead weather and pandemic permitting. Please check our website for weather updates as we get closer to the hunt.

**New Details**
To help keep our community safe during the pandemic, we have a few new details for this year's Tree Hunt. Please note:

  • You and your group will need to pre-register for the Tree Hunt. Only groups that are pre-registered are allowed to attend the Tree Hunt. Register by clicking the yellow "register now" button above.
  • Face masks: Per recent Oregon Health Authority (OHA) guidelines, face masks are no longer required in outdoors spaces. You are more than welcome to wear a face mask if you'd like. OHA strongly recommends that individuals who are unvaccinated, immunocompromised, at risk for severe COVID-19 disease, or live with someone in one of these categories, continue to wear a mask in crowded areas.
  • No gathering: To limit groups gathering, hot drinks, on-site wreath making, and children's crafts will not be available. (Yes, we're sad too!)
  • Check-in instructions are virtual: We will email attendees before the Tree Hunt with videos explaining tree cutting, safety guidelines, ways to donate, and other information. Please make sure you provide a valid email address when signing up.
  • Do not attend if you are sick or have been exposed to COVID-19: We request that you do not attend the Tree Hunt if you have been feeling any COVID-19 symptoms, have been diagnosed with COVID-19 in the 14 days leading up to the Tree Hunt, or if you have been exposed to anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 in the 14 days leading up to the Tree Hunt. Thank you for helping us continue to keep our community safe!

**COVID Monitoring** If COVID-19 cases in Central Oregon increase significantly, we may determine that it is no longer safe to gather our community for the Tree Hunt and would need to cancel the event. Thank you for your patience and understanding during these uncertain times!

Other important details:

  • We will be cutting grand fir trees.
  • Trees are free-range and not sculpted to be the perfect Christmas tree. But they are beautiful and available in lots of sizes.
  • Trees are scattered throughout the forests of the Metolius Preserve so you will have to hunt for them!
  • Bring your own hand saw (no chainsaws please), gloves, and rope.
  • Dogs are allowed on leash only.
  • Dress for the weather.
  • Parking is limited next to the Metolius North Trailhead. Expect to park further away and walk to the Tree Hunt. Our volunteers will help you with parking!

There is a suggested $20 donation.
We encourage you to make your suggested donation online after you register for the Tree Hunt. On the day of the Tree Hunt, cash or checks will be the only accepted donation type.

Thank you for helping us make the 2021 Tree Hunt safe and fun for everyone!

The Fine Print: The Tree Hunt has been held since 2003 and we’re pleased to report that you are doing a fabulous job restoring
our forest! However, it also means that trees ripe for cutting are getting further afield. Please be prepared to hunt accordingly.
