Sustainability Commitment

The Deschutes Land Trust is committed to sustainability in the workplace. Find out more below.

As an organization dedicated to protecting the land and natural resources of Central Oregon forever, the Land Trust
recognizes that our internal practices impact our larger conservation efforts. We therefore believe we can positively impact conservation outcomes by limiting our own organizational footprint and by striving for sustainability at our workplace.

Current Efforts:

We have implemented a range of sustainability efforts at our office and at events that we host. While this list is not exhaustive, some of our efforts include:

  • We only use reusable dishware in our office kitchen;
  • We compost food scraps in our office kitchen;
  • We recycle all materials accepted in Deschutes county. This includes reusing shredded paper as bedding for animals at the Humane Society of Central Oregon;
  • We purchase paper towels and facial tissues with a minimum of 30% post-consumer waste recycled content;
  • We set all office computers and laptops to go into sleep mode after 10 minutes of inactivity;
  • We print on the backside of one-sided paper to minimize our paper usage;
  • We print promotional materials with vegetable or other low-VOC inks;
  • We offer employee commuting incentives through Commute Options;
  • We encourage carpooling during work hours;
  • We offer remote work opportunities to staff;
  • We use reusable mugs, glasses, plates, and silverware at events whenever possible;
  • We encourage event attendees to not print their tickets.

Future Efforts:

We recognize that it's unrealistic to implement all of our goals immediately. Here are some of our goals that we'd like to incorporate in the future:

  • We create environmentally preferable purchasing guidelines;
  • We install a 365-day programmable thermostat to control heating and air conditioning;
  • We use motion sensor lighting controls in our office;
  • We use energy efficient lighting, replacing all lighting with LEDs;
  • We replace all existing faucet aerators with low flow fixtures;
  • We use remanufactured printer cartridges;
  • We convert work vehicles to low emission vehicles such as electric, hybrid, natural gas, or alternative fuels;
  • We do business with organizations and businesses that have environmental sustainability standards.
