Join the Deschutes Land Trust and Derek Loeb for a geology hike along the Summit Loop Trail at Smith Rock State Park. This gorgeous loop follows the Burma Road up to a ridge overlooking the area. On the descent, the Summit Loop Trail crosses a private property protected by the Land Trust before joining the Park's river trail. Learn about how this dramatic area was formed by volcanic forces and the relentless erosive power of the Crooked River while taking in sweeping views of the Cascade crest. **Registration is required and opens 1 month prior to the event.**

  • About the Property

The Summit Loop Trail at Smith Rock State Park crosses onto private property owned by the Ranch at the Canyons and conserved by the Deschutes Land Trust. Since 2007, the Land Trust has held a land protection agreement with the owners of Ranch at the Canyons that protects 550 acres next to the State Park. The agreement conserves Sherwood Canyon (a side canyon off the Crooked River) that is sandwiched between the Crooked River, Smith Rock State Park, and federal land managed by the Bureau of Land Management. The agreement protects scenic views, winter range for deer and elk, and Crooked River frontage.

  • Accessibility

The Land Trust is working to make our Walks + Hikes as accessible as possible. Please let us know at least one week in advance if there is something we can do or provide to support you in participating in this outing to the fullest and we will accommodate as possible.
