The Deschutes Land Trust announced today its winter Nature Nights series. From bees of Central Oregon to the real dirt on soil, the Land Trust is offering free, monthly presentations on nature-related topics given by experts in their field. Presentations include:
January 24: The Remarkable Native Bees of Central Oregon
7-8:30pm, Tower Theatre, Bend
Did you know Oregon has more than 700 species of native bees?!? We say “more than" because, in fact, no one actually knows how many native bees call the state home. Central Oregon is particularly well endowed with these amazing bees. Join the Deschutes Land Trust and Andony Melathopoulos to learn about the unique and sometimes weird bees of Central Oregon. Andony will also discuss the ongoing efforts to find all of our native bees and provide gardening tips on how to make these special pollinators feel at home in your backyard. This presentation is free, but you must get your ticket online.
February 21: The Real Dirt on Soil!
7-8:30pm, Tower Theatre, Bend
It’s ALL about soil! Soil is a critical part of the natural world that is perhaps the least understood. That’s why the Deschutes Land Trust and Oregon State University professor James Cassidy are teaming up to share the real dirt on soil! Join us to gain a better understanding of soil and its fundamental importance to our lives. Learn what every human should know about the world of soils, including all about nutrients, how soil stores water and nutrients, and the ways soil gives life to the world we know and love. This presentation is free and ticket sales open one month prior to the event.
March 20: An Introduction to the Klamath Tribes
7-8:30pm, Tower Theatre, Bend
Join Gabriann Hall of the Klamath Tribes and the Deschutes Land Trust for an evening centered around the Klamath Tribes. Gabriann will share her personal perspective and insight through acknowledging Native history and carrying on the tradition of oral storytelling. Learn about the impact of Termination and Restoration on the Klamath Tribes’ people, then gain a better understanding about current issues related to treaty rights, first foods, and dam removal. Gabriann will finish the evening talking about the Klamath Tribes’ work on water and land restoration. This presentation is free and ticket sales open one month prior to the event.
