Did you miss Nature Kids in April? No worries, we know how busy life can get. During April, we explored the world of birds! We learned all about bird watching, practiced using binoculars, and discovered how birds communicate and find tasty snacks. We also did a fun nature-based activity to get comfortable outside, explore how nature is a great place to play, and create temporary art. You can try this fun project home, here's how!

Make Your Own Nature Mandala
A mandala is a circular design with repeating elements. Making your own is a simple and fun outdoor project using naturally found materials. It's great for ages 4-10, and younger children may enjoy with adult help.

Step 1: Collect Nature Treasures
Look around outside for items that are on the ground, such as:

  • Leaves
  • Rocks
  • Sticks
  • Shells
  • Pine cones
  • Flower petals
  • Seeds or acorns

Remember: only pick up items that are already on the ground, and avoid sharp or unsafe objects.

Step 2: Choose Your Spot
Find a flat surface outdoors, or use a tray, plate, or piece of cardboard.

Step 3: Start with the Center
Place one special natural item in the middle. This is the heart of your mandala.

Step 4: Build Outwards
Add items in circles around the center. Try patterns like:

  • Leaf, rock, leaf, rock
  • Big to small
  • Light to dark colors

Step 5: Expand Your Design
Keep adding rings, lines, or spirals. Make it as big as you like. There’s no wrong way to make a mandala; follow your imagination!

Step 6: Take a Picture
Your mandala won’t last forever, so take a photo to remember it. Enjoy your creation, and notice how nature, art, and a simple plan come together.
